The Meaning Behind our Name - It's Not a Typo!
Language matters. Especially in the HMong language. It has the power to bring people together or leave people out. At NEW HMong we have made deliberate choices for our branding and language usage that reflects and includes all members of the HMong diaspora, and the diverse dialects represented in our HMong language.
Why "NEW" HMong?
The word “NEW” in NEW HMong reflects both our home in NorthEast Wisconsin (NEW) and the growing vision of our organization. As we expand our mission and deepen our impact, NEW also stands for our community-driven approach to supporting HMong identity, values, wellness, and leadership across generations.
Why "HMong" Instead of "Hmong"?
NEW HMong uses the uppercase H and M in “HMong” to honor both major dialects and our commitment to inclusivity. Here’s why:

"Hmong" is the general term for our ethnic group

Within the Hmong language, there are two main dialects:

Hmong Dawb (White Hmong)

Mong Leeg/Mong Ntsuab (Green Mong)

By capitalizing H and M, the term “HMong” acknowledges both dialects and identities—Hmong and Mong—equally.
